LA based fashionista Deborah Lindquist has been a leading force in green fashion since she began designing in 1983. Straight out of Parsons School of Design, and way before the green fashion movement caught any steam, Lindquist’s first design was a belt crafted from recycled leather. Her next foray took her into creating bustiers crafted from vintage coats. These short sholdered cleavage boosting numbers enjoyed quite a bit of success in the 90s and have been brought back into the spotlight by pop sensation The Pussycat Dolls.

Fast forward to today and she has taken her passion for recycling vintage materials to a whole new level, servicing celebrity A-listers such as Jessica Simpson, Gwen Stefani, Paris Hilton and more. Her line includes cashmere sweaters made from recycled material, cutting edge scarves, eighties style fingerless gloves as well as an entire collection of green wedding dresses.

Her designs have definitely taken a que from the west coast lifestyle, giving birth to such signature styles as sleeveless cashmere sweaters and embroidered Skull and Bones cardigens. The new collection relies heavily on the use of recycled wool, leather, cashmere and lace. She is also working with new materials such as organic cotton, hemp, silk and soy chiffon. Lindquist readily acknowledges that no approach is 100% green and that many of these new fabrics have their downsides. As an example, Soy fabric which is created from tofu waste is often genetically modified and grown with the use of herbicides and pesticides.

The current collection also makes use of “peace silks”. While traditional silk is created by boiling cocoons inhabited with live moths, peace silks allowing the moths to emerge from their cocoons before harnessing the fiber. Animal fibers are used in the collection but only when the sources come from animals that are well treated and unharmed. These include the removal of goats hair for cashmere and the shearing of sheep for wool.

Recently Lindquist was selected as one of three U.S. designers to be part of the Ethical Fashion Show. For more information on the collection visit http://www.deborahlindquist.com/

The name of the computer is the iameco and it is built from biodegradable wood panels comprised of waste products from the lumber and pulp industry.

One of the amazing features of this new eco computer is that implanted within the wood panels, are seeds from native-tree species, so that when the components are buried in a landfill the wood breaks down and new trees begin to grow!

Paul Maher, managing director at MicroPro, says “Our business is built around green technologies: using them to produce healthier, more energy-efficient and cheaper computers that have less impact on the environment”.

In addition to being biodegradable the iameco uses one third less energy than typical computers. Now that’s green!

Axon’s manufacturing process specializes in carbon fiber which they use to make cars light, safe and fuel efficient. It’s been common knowledge that carbon fiber offers the strength of steel with only a fraction of the weight. Due to the high cost of traditional manufacturing techniques, carbon fiber has been largely looked over with respect to automobile construction. And since it’s been more profitable to focus on increasing engine power rather than making lighter cars, most manufacturers have chosen steel and aluminum. Axon now believes that they can produce a carbon fiber frame cheaper than metal counterparts.

Axon is a UK based company and they are shooting to have the car available for sale in Europe by 2010

Rankings were formulated using the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) miles-per-gallon ratings for city and highway travel. The rating for each SUV below is expressed in mpg as a city/highway ratio.

All ratings apply to base models with manual transmissions, except where indicated otherwise with an asterisk. All ratings apply to 2WD models, with the exception being the Toyota Highlander Hybrid.

Each model was allowed only one appearance on the list except in the case of the Ford Escape and Mazda Tribute, which appeared twice as a result of being available in both gas-electric hybrid and standard gasoline versions.

   1. Ford Escape Hybrid — 34/30*
The Ford Escape Hybrid offers a potent hybrid drivetrain and a roomy interior.

      Mazda Tribute Hybrid — 34/30*
Exceptional mileage makes the Mazda Tribute a king among hybrids.

      Mercury Mariner Hybrid — 34/30*
Like its corporate twins, the Tribute Hybrid and Escape Hybrid, the Mercury Mariner Hybrid offers class-leading fuel economy and low tailpipe emissions.

   2. Saturn Vue Hybrid — 25/32*
The Saturn Vue Hybrid’s affordable price makes it one of the true bargains of the hybrid bunch.

   3. Toyota Highlander Hybrid — 27/25*
Performance and fuel economy achieve harmonious coexistence in this sterling Toyota.

   4. Lexus RX 400h — 27/24*
The RX 400h is expensive, but it offers all the quickness and luxury you’d expect from a Lexus.

   5. Jeep Compass — 23/28
The Compass comes armed with a low price tag and the sort of compact dimensions that enhance maneuverability.

   6. Ford Escape — 22/28
Even without the benefit of a hybrid powertrain, the Escape is thrifty enough to earn a place on our list.

      Mazda Tribute — 22/28
Ditto for its twin, the capable Tribute; this Mazda also offers a long list of safety features.

   7. Nissan Rogue — 22/27*
Turn to the Rogue for a carlike driving experience and a well-crafted cabin.

Everytime you use this card you will be effectively offsetting your carbon footprint, because the points earned from your purchases are “invested on your behalf to help build renewable energy products”. Brighter Planet also offers you the ability to directly purchase carbon offsets called “Planet Shares”, where you pay a fixed amount to offset a specific amount of CO2 emissions. As an example they charge $48 for a 4 ton carbon offset.

The website offers you tools to calculate your carbon footprint as well as other informational tips and resources. You can create a free account to track of your offsets. Once you create your account they set you up with an interactive profile where you can track your yearly carbon emissions. With your built in carbon calculator you can estimate the yearly carbon impact of your lifestyle based on the type of car your drive, how often you fly, where you live etc. You can also link up to your Bank Of America credit card and monitor how the offsets produced from using the card are calculated in your yearly carbon total.

All the offsets that Brighter Planet offers are purchased through Native Energy.com. The philosophy behind the offsets program is basically that by contributing to renewable energy projects you are reducing the amount of power generated by burning fossil fuels.

They carry everything from classic baby shower invitations featuring Winnie the Pooh to invitations with bright modern graphics.

* Cards are printed on 100% Post Consumer Recycled paper with a matte finish.
* Envelopes are made of 100% Post Consumer Recycled paper. The are 70 pound paper and provide a nice feel and protection for the card. The envelopes are also produced with a chlorine free process and are Forest Steward Council certified.
* Shipping is done through the US Postal Service. The reasoning for this is because they come to your house nearly every day and there is a minimal incremental impact to having a package sent through them. They do not have to drive a big truck all the way to your house just to deliver our package. Their packing materials are nearly 100 percent recycled or certified. The only item that is not is the plastic bag that the card and envelopes are packed in to protect them from humidity and water damage.

In their own words
“We use recycled and low impact products around the office as much as we reasonably can and do little things like turn off the lights and computers at the end of the day. These little things along with our other efforts we hope add up to make a big difference.”

The Chevy Volt will use a lithium-ion battery with a variety of range-extending onboard power sources, including gas and, in some vehicles, E85 ethanol to recharge the battery while you drive beyond the 40-mile battery range. It is also being designed to be compatible with a standard household plug.

The following is a quote from Tony Posawatz, Vehicle Line Director, E-Flex Systems and The Chevy Volt, General Motors Corp:

“We have devoted significant resources to this project: Over 200 engineers and 50 designers are working on the Volt alone, and another 400 are working on related subsystems and electric components. That’s how important we think this is, and that’s how much stock we place in the future of extended-range electric vehicles like the Chevy Volt.”
